Why “Fools and Sages”?
One of the biggest mysteries of the site is the name – why is it some random phrase that may or may not sound familiar? Well, the name is actually a lyric from the Aerosmith song “Dream On”:
Half my life is in book written pages
Live and learn from fools and from sages
You know its true
All these things come back to you
I first heard the song in the Disney movie Miracle, the one about the USA men’s ice hockey team beating the USSR in the 1980 Winter Olymics. You know, the biggest upset in the history of sports? The one with the most famous sports call ever (“Do you believe in miracles? Yes!”)? Yeah, that one. Anyways, the song was playing at the end of the movie, and I instantly fell in love. It became associated with hockey, and with overcoming all odds to do what was considered impossible. And its just a great song musically.
When it came time to choose a site name, I had no idea what to do. I was thinking of using one of my user names, but I change them at an alarming rate (kittycookie, funky_mishap, spellhex, annwitch, and mymclife have all been used widely, with a few others thrown in). I finally settled on choosing song lyrics, but had no idea what song. But after looking at Dream On’s lyrics, I knew I had the song. And the phrase “Fools and Sages” just popped out at me, and the site name was born.
Fools and Sages was created as an outlet for photoshopping, web design, and hockey rants. I currently attend school in Southern California, but do not hesitate to yell "BEAT LA!" As a Sharks fan, I will defend Patrick Marleau to the death. I have stats, and I'm not afraid to use them.
