Pseudo 3-D Effect
So, there’s this cool little effect floating around, where a picture is given 3D treatment. You know, the old style of 3D, that’s in greyscale but is really made up of red and cyan. Its really quite easy – just follow below!
First order of business is to choose an image. Its preferable that the image has a white-ish background. I chose this picture of Marc-Edouard Vlasic, aka “Pickles” (because of Vlasic Pickles… get it?).

Now, your first order of business is to make this picture grayscale. For Photoshop, the easiest way is to press Ctrl+Shift+U. You can really use whatever method you want (change the saturation, gradient map, etc.), but I chose to use the easy way.

Now, duplicate that layer (Ctrl+J) so you have two grayscale layers. Go back to the original layer (which should be Layer 1 if you haven’t done anything else), and then go to Layer >> New Fill Layer >> Solid Color.

For the color, choose #ff0000. Basically, its red. You should be able to just click in one of the top corners of the color map, put Brightness and Saturation at 100%, and there you go. Press okay when you’re done. After that, set your Color Fill layer to Screen at 100%.

Repeat that process with the next layer; click on Layer 1 copy (if you haven’t changed the names yet), create a new Color Fill Layer, and this time input #00ffff. Set it to Screen at 100%.

Create two new groups – don’t know how to do that? There’s a little folder icon at the bottom of the Layers tab. Click that twice, and voila! Two groups. Label them “Red” and “Cyan,” and set them up the same way I have below. For the Cyan group, set the group to Darken. ZOMG, its grayscale!

Select the Cyan group and Nudge it in any direction you please. I personally like nudging it two pixels up and to the left, but it really doesn’t matter.

Uh oh, what’s this? Strips of cyan just won’t do. Go to the cyan color fill layer, and click on the Layer Mask (that white box). Then, click on the rectangle tool and set the color to black. Go over those strips with rectangles, and presto! They’re gone!

After that, feel free to spruce up the image with text or brushes. Here is my finished product:

Hope you enjoyed this tutorial and found it easy!
